Orlando – The Ambassador of Field of Dreams
Field of Dreams got the call on Jan 24th, 2008 regarding Orlando needing a new home.
The high was zero degrees and the owners said they had to help him get up the last three
days as he was weak and old. If we wanted him we could come and get him – otherwise he
would probably freeze to death over night. Needless to say, many wonderful volunteers
leaped into action to take in our little friend. Lisa Fuhs from the Virgil Vet Clinic received
the original call regarding Orlando. She contacted FOD where Jody Zyck was taking care
of the barn as three other members of the board were in Orlando, FL (hence how he got
his name). Jody prepared the stall (remember this was all in Zero degrees as a high for the
day) and Lisa contacted Karen & Teri Ziober who chiseled (literally) their
truck and trailer out of the ice to go pick him up. Jody recalled that when
he entered the barn he could barely walk as he truly looked frozen and
his eyes had very little sign of life in them – he had almost given up.
Every hair on his body was an ice icicle – he clinked when he walked.
Jody’s husband Don, her three daughters, MJ – Mallory – and Missy,
another wonderful volunteer, Kathy Rust were all kind enough to also
come and get things ready for our new arrival. Orlando was massaged
with towels to melt the ice on him and get his circulation going again.
After a couple hours of getting him comfortable – Jody, Lisa, Don, MJ,
Mallory, Missy, Kathy, Karen & Teri went home to get warmed up
themselves. We have never once had to help him get up as he can clearly do it on his own
after he warmed up. Orlando has become a permanent resident of Field of Dreams. He is
so kind and gentle with everyone who enters the barn. He gets to run loose in the barn as
long as we are there and greets everyone who enters. He gained the needed 50 pounds
that he was lacking when he came in and when turned out in the pasture with the five
biggest horses on the property - he seemed to have them all under control. He has such
wisdom and kindness in his eyes – we may have misnamed him – maybe Yoda would have
been better. Orlando has attended our 2008 fall Luau fundraiser, a Equine Art festiful, and
plans to visit a couple schools. He graciously baby-sits any horse that need to stay in for
the day so they won’t be lonely. He has taken over the position of Ambassador for Field of
Dreams now that Casey has passed on. By the way, did I mention Orlando turns 43 years
old on January 24th, 2009 and is still going STRONG………
